About this course
This course equips students with critical knowledge of the laws and best practices governing arrests, searches, and seizures. It provides a deep understanding of the legal distinctions between the roles and authorities of police officers versus private security personnel. Emphasis is placed on the importance of security officers with a focus on prevention, observation, and de-escalation, rather than engagement in law enforcement duties.
The goal is teach students when and how they may lawfully conduct private person’s arrests under Penal Code 837, including strict criteria for misdemeanor and felony arrests. The course highlights real-world case law to stress the serious liabilities associated with wrongful arrests, false imprisonment, and unlawful searches.
Additionally, the course addresses how to manage unconscious bias, foster respectful interactions, and apply the Golden Rule and mindfulness techniques. These elements are designed to enhance the student’s ability to make calm, informed decisions in high-stakes situations, which improves interactions and reduces unnecessary escalations.
The course also emphasizes how to properly articulate probable cause and adhere to company policies on the use of force and arrests. Students will be better prepared to protect client assets at the same time they contribute to a safer, more professional security operation and safeguard you from potential legal claims.
