About this course
National Institute of Public Safety (National IPS), in partnership with Guard Boss, is committed to providing high-quality security and professional development training designed to prepare students for real-world success in the private security industry.
As a security officer, your primary responsibilities are to observe, report, and help maintain a safe environment. However, in limited situations, security professionals may be required to lawfully detain or restrain an individual. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, legal understanding, and practical awareness necessary to safely and professionally apply restraint techniques within the scope of private security operations.
In this course, students will learn:
- The legal requirements and limitations surrounding private person’s arrests and lawful detention procedures
- How different types of restraints and handcuffs function, including their strengths, limitations, and proper application
- Proper handcuffing and subject control procedures designed to maximize officer safety and reduce unnecessary risk
- Safety considerations when restraining individuals, including circulation concerns, positional asphyxia, and medical emergencies
- The legal standards surrounding reasonable force and the importance of remaining within lawful use-of-force guidelinesProper incident documentation and reporting procedures following a detention or restraint incident
- Professional communication and de-escalation techniques to reduce the need for physical force whenever possibleBest practices for maintaining scene control while minimizing liability exposure
- This course is designed to help security professionals recognize when restraint may be legally appropriate and how to safely and effectively control a subject while maintaining professionalism, safety, and compliance with applicable laws and industry standards.
